WHO WE ARE
An independent group for those who care for or about friends and relatives with mental health problems.
The group:
- gives support to new and old Carers. We all understand the shock and trauma experienced after a friend or relative's first episode of mental illness and the questions and stresses that may follow. We come together to support one another, sharing ideas about living with enduring mental illness.
- contributes to improving services through representation on statutory bodies and through lobbying and campaigning.
- interacts with professional workers through talks, discussions and conferences.
- produces a monthly newsletter 'Carers News', with reports, articles, stories and humour, which currently has a circulation of about 360 copies.
- has a monthly informal meeting to which all mental health Carers are welcome.
WHEN AND WHERE WE MEET
The group meets the afternoon of the second Wednesday of every month at a regular venue in central Exeter. This meeting is a chance to share experiences with fellow Carers as well as to learn more about mental health matters from invited speakers.
Some Carers come to this meeting every month, others once in a while, some once and then hardly ever. It is a good place to find supportive friendships and to learn what works from experienced Carers. Carers are of all ages and backgrounds.
Whilst the Forum acts as a central, monthly focus for Exeter Carers, Carers also organise other regular groups in the area (for example, meeting in the evenings). Details of these can be found by looking at Diary Dates on this web site or by contacting Carers′ Support Workers.
